On safari the first animals that will likely be seen
are the antelope. Although there are many species they
are generally easy to distinguish by their size. The
larger ones can reach heights of 1.2 metres (about 4
feet) or more at the shoulders with the smaller ones
rarely reaching 90 centimetres (under 3 feet).
The
largest of the antelope is the Eland standing at about
1.8 metres (6 feet). Its general colour varies from
a grayish to fawn texture with somewhat of a reddish
brown appearance. The other distinguishing feature is
the narrow white stripes on the sides of its body.
The Eland is considered, not only one of the most graceful
mammals in the animal kingdom but many say one of the
most intelligent. In addition to its strength and determination
is a unique desire to put its herd ahead of itself even
under the most trying circumstances of survival.
It
is clear the Eland is a true team player.
